A hoe versus a tractor in the vineyard: How we look after our vineyards using organic methods

Life in the vineyard isn’t just about romance and a glass of wine 🍇
Behind every bottle lie hours of work – and often the decision of what to do by hand and what can be handled by machinery.
Here at Holánek Winery, we combine both. And when it comes to organic farming, this is doubly true.
Why work in the vineyard is so important
The quality of wine doesn’t begin in the cellar, but right there in the vineyard.
The way we look after the soil, the vines and the grapes is directly reflected in the final flavour of the wine.
In an organic vineyard, moreover:
- we do not use chemical ‘quick fixes’
- we have to plan more carefully and think ahead
- and we often have to intervene in good time, even by hand – especially in the youngest vineyards
The hoe: a traditional approach that still has its place
Hand weeding remains irreplaceable in the vineyard.
Advantages:
- high precision when working around the vines
- gentle on the vines
- the ability to check the vines’ health immediately
Disadvantages:
- time-consuming
- physically demanding
We mainly use manual labour in the youngest plantations.
Tractor: efficient work even in the tree trunk zone
Modern technology now allows for very precise work even in areas where work was previously carried out exclusively by hand.
When managing the tree-trunk zone, we use specialised tools that enable us to carry out this work efficiently with a tractor – using our own resources.
Advantages:
- significant time savings
- the ability to cover a larger area
- sufficient precision when correctly adjusted
Disadvantages:
- greater demands on the operator’s skills and experience
- the need for careful adjustment to avoid damaging the stems
The tractor therefore helps us today even in places where, in the past, manual labour alone would have been necessary.
Conclusion
Every method of working has its place in the vineyard.
And it is precisely this combination that allows us to make wine the way we want to – honestly, with respect for nature and with an emphasis on quality 🍇
It’s not just about machinery or manual labour.
It always comes down, first and foremost, to the person behind it.
